This trip was hosted by the City of Independence, MO. All opinions are my own.
This past weekend, Jeff and I had a whirlwind weekend in Independence, MO. Rich with history, this little town right outside of Kansas City is home to the only Missouri US President, Harry S. Truman.
We were invited to celebrate Harry S. Truman Day for his 135th Birthday as well as see all of the offerings that Independence has. If you’re in the Midwest and looking for a fun short trip, definitely consider this. From St. Louis, this was about a 3 1/2 hour trip. Perfect with family trip.
Here are 5 must see things while you are there –
Clinton’s Soda Fountain – Pop in for a cold Phosphate with a scoop of ice cream. This quaint soda shop is the perfect stop for cute photos and a sweet treat.
Chicago & Alton Depot – Built in 1879, this two-story depot was moved down the street and fully restored by 2003. You would never know! With a waiting room, and an upstairs living quarters, this is a neat exhibit to learn more about the railway system’s history in Independence.
Bingham-Waggoner Estate – Want to learn more about the history of Independence? Start with the Bingham-Waggoner Estate. This was our first stop on our adventure and the guides were incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the town and how the owners of the estate really helped shape the backstory of the city. The Estate has 90% of the original furnishings and is quite a treat to tour.
Vaile Mansion – The three-story Gothic-like structure today sits in solitary splendor, an architectural anomaly among the surrounding Midwestern homes. So pretty outside, you definitely need a stop to explore all the gorgeous artifacts inside.
Truman Library – We could have spent hours here. So much history of Truman, his life, presidency and more. There are 2 permanent exhibits to explore – Truman: The Presidential years and Harry S. Truman: His Life and Times. I love learning more about our previous presidents especially such a unique time in the history of the country.
Jeff and I love staying at Bed & Breakfasts when we travel. We always find that the breakfast is superb, and the Hawthorn was no exception. We spent 2 days here. The mansion is stunning. Any accommodation you could need was available, even snacks! Jeff and I actually had a quiet night in the 2nd night playing Scrabble in the main area and just having some fun quality time together. Overall, I would highly recommend returning here.
Overall, we really enjoyed learning more about Independence, MO and having a short get away. If you’re into history and learning more about where we came from, then this little town is for you. You’d never know there was so much history in just one city, we’re so grateful for the opportunity to learn more.
