Summer Reading Programs 2017

This post may contain affiliate links. A small portion of sales will go towards supporting And Hattie Makes Three.

We’re officially at the stage of doing summer reading programs! Hurray! We are a book reading family and Hattie loves to read books, so it was no surprise when we signed up for all the summer reading programs. There are two ways I’ve seen these programs laid out. One way is the number of books read or how many minutes read. For our house we’re going to focus more on how many books are read because that seems a little easier. All of the websites allow you to register or print out a sheet where you can keep track of your reading and then head to the library or store and claim your prizes. I mean, free stuff for reading. I’ll do it! There are even adult options for many of these too. I’m going to give it a go too because I’m none too impressed with summer TV for the most part.

Here are a list local programs to St. Louis programs. If there are any national programs you’re familiar with that you participate in, let me know and I am happy to add them to the list! Many of these program run through the end of July or early August. Check the individual program for details. Happy Reading!

St. Louis Programs

St. Louis County Library – Register online and track your progress or download a sheet based on your age range. This program looks to tracking minutes of reading. When you attend library events, there will be secret codes worth extra points! How fun!

St. Charles County Library – This is our favorite one and home base for us. So many prizes and fun activities. This program encourages you to not only read but also get involved in activities too! The Bubble Bus and Storybook Walks are our favorite. You can register online too!

St. Louis Public Library – Earn prizes for reading 5 fiction books or 15 picture books. You can register online too!

Webster Groves Public Library –  Build a Better World Summer Reading Program. Register online.

The following have reciprocal lending agreements with SLCL

Kirkwood Public Library – They have a really neat Reading Under the Sun Program for all!

Brentwood Public Library – Build a Better World Summer Reading Program. Log your results online.

National Programs

Barnes and Nobel Summer Reading Program #BNSummerReading – This program is for elementary school kids, but it’s one where you can get a free book. Just print out the reading journal, read 8 books and you’re eligible for a free book!

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge – This keeps track of online minutes as well, kids can do everything online fairly easily with parental supervision.
