For years, I have looked at Rent the Runway as an option for our big events, and I never pulled the trigger. Well, this year I decided to go for it. This past weekend we attended a charity gala and the attire was cocktail. I knew I didn’t really want to spend money on a dress that I’d likely never wear again, and I wanted something really stunning.
If you aren’t familiar with RTR, you have the opportunity to rent high end designer dresses at a fraction of the cost for your event. They even send you two sizes to insure that you’ll have one that fits. If for some reason it doesn’t fit, or you just don’t love it, they’ll over night you a new option for an additional fee.
I started my search a few months ago knew thing this was the route I wanted to go. My goal was to only have to find shoes and jewelry. I was excited because one of my favorite designers Tadashi Shoji had choices. My original choice was a Monique Lhuillier dress, but sadly when I tried to book my dates it was not available. I think it worked out for the best though. They have quite the selection of dresses based on your event, so I was able to find a great second option. You can rent a dress for 4 or 8 days. I went with 4.
I took full advantage of the customer reviews as well. With some of the designers sizing is a little off, so the feedback and pictures of other customers in the dress helped a lot. My only wish is that some of the photos were clearer, but you can’t really control that.
On Thursday, my order arrived. The dresses came in a locked canvas garment bag. It had both dresses and the instructions to return the dress. I quickly tried it on and I was so excited my original requested size fit. No need to try on the other.
I ended up pairing my outfit with a pair of Nine West heels and Kendra Scott earrings from my RockBox. I ended up having to accept an award at the event on my grandfather’s behalf, so I was so glad I had chosen this dress. I even got many compliments from people at the gala – which is always a good feeling.
Then the next morning, I just put the bag back together and replaced the lock and took it to my local UPS drop box. You are required to drop the dress by 12pm the day after the event. My only concern was that we used a UPS drop box (which was recommended) because UPS stores are closed and it won’t be picked up until Monday evening.
So overall, I had a great experience with Rent the Runway. I even signed up for their PRO program to save money on future orders. Keep in mind that on top of the dress rental, they charge $14.95 for insurance and shipping, so if you are considering getting more than 2 dresses in a year, it’s a great investment. Bonus – you get a free dress on your birthday too!
