Last week, we had the opportunity to try Hello Fresh. I saw a good deal with $40 off your first week and decided to take advantage of the opportunity. No compensation, just my opinion since I was interested.
I went with the 3 meals for 2 people. Usually $69 shipped but paid only $29.
Everything arrived from UPS in a huge container. It was very cold in the inside and the packs still frozen. I promptly put everything in the fridge and planned to eat over the weekend.
1) Friday – Blistered Corn & Salmon Salad
This was recommended to eat first (within 2 days) due to the fish. Overall, easy to assemble. Just some chopping and pan searing and mixing. Loved the vinaigrette. We’ll likely make that again.
Here’s the negative. My cilantro and arugula were gross. They just arrived the day before, so I was baffled as to why it was slimy. Fortunately, we had a huge container of baby spinach and swapped. I was able to salvage enough cilantro, but we’re not huge fans of that herb.
2) Saturday – Chipotle Pork Chops with Roasted Broccoli & Garlic Mashed Potatoes
I’m like to think I can handle spicy food, but the pork was way too spicy for me. I really enjoyed the concept of roasting broccoli and only ate that for dinner with the potatoes.
3) Sunday – Za’atar Pita Burgers & Zucchini Fries
This had to be my favorite meal of the 3. You made a fresh Tzaziki sauce for your burger and fries. I’ll definitely be making that again as we always have all the ingredients on hand except for the Za’atar spice – which is easy to pick up.
Overall, the food was pretty simple. Hubs noticed it took me a while to prepare some of the meals, even commenting on amount of chopping. The nice thing was that I have the recipes for all 3 meals and I can recreate them again. There wasn’t any ingredient that was just so far out there that it’s worth doing this on a regular basis. After the first negative day with the bad produce, we decided to cancel right there. I contacted customer service and they offered a $20 credit for the next week. Definitely not worth $49 for 3 meals. I could easily buy all the food in this basket for less than $25.
Just for fun, we’re going to look at Plate and Blue Apron as well and see how those are. Overall, this was just okay. Would I do it again? If I had the introductory rate again, I’d give it a go, but not worth more than $10 for a meal.
Have you tried Hello Fresh or any of the other meal services? What are your thoughts?
